Mexico Executive Call Center Report 2007

III. ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT

Political Economy

Mexico’s presidential election in July 2006 ended in a neckand- neck finish between the PAN’s Felipe Calderón and Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution. In September 2006, a federal elections tribunal unanimously ruled that Mr. Calderón had triumphed. Mr. Obrador’s rejection of the tribunal’s ruling has resulted in public display of resistance, work stoppages, road-blockages, street activism and strategic anti-government measures aimed at forcing new elections. Mr. Calderon, on the other hand presses on, with recent declaration at the World Economic Forum in Davos indicating that he will govern with “an eye toward the future.”
